About Us (and our services)

The synagogue, being part of the Reform movement, holds its Sabbath, festival and other services in a mixture of Hebrew and English.  Friday night services commence at 7.30pm and Saturday services at 10.30am.

In our services men, women and children sit together and women may be called up to the Bimah and play an equal part with men in all aspects of the services. It is expected that men wear a Kippot and when applicable a Tallit, women can chose to do so too.

Children are most welcome at our services, and a tradition unique to our synagogue is that they are called up to the Ark for the recitation of the Shema.  Both boys and girls have their bar/batmitzvah at the age of twelve/thirteen, during the Shabbat morning service.

A Kiddush is always recited on Shabbat, and family celebrations are often marked with wine and cakes/biscuits.  A recent addition is that anyone who has a simchah is invited to read the Haftorah, or to be called up on the anniversary of their bar/batmitzvah.  Yahzeits are also remembered during our services.

All Yom Tovim are celebrated, and a special oneg or communal supper often follows.  Family services are held on a regular basis, when the children lead the congregation. Details of all services are in our quarterly bulletin or see Calendar.

SDRS has unisex disabled facilities for wheelchair users.
